Memories of The Great War presented by Jack Scully at Elmwood Hall – Danbury Senior Center on Thursday, May 11 at 1:00 pm.
Jack Scully has been actively researching his family history for over thirty-five years. He lives with his wife Barbara in Brookfield, CT. Jack was born and raised in Burlington, New Jersey and moved to Connecticut in 1977. His family roots are mainly concentrated in southern New Jersey with links to New England and Western Europe.
Jack is a U.S. Navy veteran and retired from IBM. Jack and Barbara have five daughters and eleven grand children. His work at IBM involved a lot of foreign travel, which allowed Jack to visit the hometowns of many of his ancient relatives in Europe. He is a long time member of the Brookfield Historical Society and the Danbury Senior Center. He has taught several genealogy courses in Danbury and Brookfield and gave a talk on “Genealogy & Technology” at the Danbury Area Computer Society.
Jack decided to create an in-depth profile of one of his ancestors when he became a bit frustrated at the lack of new genealogical information he was able to uncover as the years went by. As many of us have experienced, the further back in time your research takes you, the less information seems to be available.
Jack chose to concentrate on just one ancestor instead of trying to add more names to his genealogy list. He decided on trying to find as much information as possible on John Powell Scully, his father’s older brother and WWI U.S. Army veteran. Jack found this new path in family history research to be the most rewarding research he had done. In addition to the information he uncovered about his uncle, he found a number of interesting details about the U.S. Army’s involvement in WWI.
He will share with us the many resources he used and stories about the people who helped him obtain information about his Uncle John. Although the presentation features his uncle, the sources and methods Jack used can be applied to anyone’s study of their family history.
Jack promises that his presentation will be informal, fun for all and hopefully include information that may be of interest to you in your pursuit of your family history.
